What’s in the Baseball Collection

The four groups we sort the baseball estate into — from vintage Topps through today’s Bowman prospects.

1950s–70s Topps Singles

Vintage Topps from the hobby’s classic era. Every card’s year, set and card number confirmed, with corners, edges and centering noted honestly. Old cardboard shows its age; we tell you exactly how.

1989 Upper Deck

The set that changed card quality, with photo-quality fronts and hologram backs. We check condition closely because high-grade copies are what collectors chase.

90s Inserts

Chrome, refractors, die-cuts and short-printed inserts from the decade that invented chase cards. These are scarcer than the base cards from the same years.

Bowman, 2000–Today

Prospect cards from Bowman and Bowman Chrome, where many players get their first card before they reach the majors. Look for the “1st Bowman” logo, and check parallels and numbered cards.

For New Collectors

New to Baseball Cards? Start Here.

Baseball cards have the deepest back catalog in the hobby, which is exactly why new collectors get lost. Three things worth knowing before you spend anything.

1

Learn the set year before the player.

A baseball card’s identity is year, set and card number — not just the name on the front. “1959 Topps #514” and a reprint of it look nearly identical in a photo but are entirely different purchases. Always confirm the year and set.

2

Centering is the first thing graders punish.

Look at the border thickness on all four sides. Vintage stock is famous for being off-center left-to-right. A card with perfect corners and 80/20 centering will still grade far lower than you expect.

3

Buy raw first, grade later.

Grading costs money and takes time, and not every card is worth it. Start with raw singles you like, learn to judge condition yourself, and only slab the cards that genuinely deserve it.
